A group established to help cardiac patients throughout Staffordshire is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a special fundraiser this weekend.
The Healthy Heart Group has been providing information and education to patients and carers since 1987.
Run by a team of volunteers and members of the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust’s cardiac rehabilitation unit, the group was set up to give extra support to patients with heart conditions.
Up to 60 people attend the group, which meets on the second Saturday of each month at Stafford Hospital.
An auction will be held at 10am this Saturday at the hospital’s Post Graduate Medical Centre to help raise funds for the group and to celebrate its milestone anniversary. Lots up for grabs will include baskets of goodies, bathrobes and health and beauty items.
Cardiac rehabilitation manager, Maria Glover, said everyone would be made welcome.
“It’s a really friendly group,” said Maria. “We encourage families to come along as well as patients so they can all learn something about living with their various heart conditions.
“All of our volunteers are former patients and their carers who have previously benefitted from our services. People are able to have a cup of coffee and mingle with other patients before the speakers start. It’s great because it gives people to opportunity to speak to others who are often in the same situation.
“We would love to see members of the public as well as our regular members at the auction on Saturday. All money raised will go back into the Healthy Heart Group.”
Topics covered at the monthly Healthy Heart meetings include diet, exercise and stress management.
“Our aim to give patients and carers the confidence and comfort to look forward to a new, happy and healthy life ahead,” added Maria.
