Norovirus at Stafford Hospital - update

22 February 2013

A number of wards at Stafford Hospital are currently affected by Norovirus and the Trust is asking all patients to limit the number of visitors to two at a time.

Colin Ovington, Director Nursing & Midwifery says: ‘Ward staff are working with our excellent infection control team to contain the Norovirus within the areas affected.

‘We apologise for any inconvenience that the visitor limit may cause, but this will assist us in containing the spread of Norovirus. All visitors are encouraged to wash their hands with soap and water and to apply the hand gel before and after visiting.

‘We are also asking visitors to think carefully about whether they need to come into hospital if they have experienced diarrhoea, vomiting or flu-like symptoms.

‘We know that sometimes visitors feel they must take every opportunity to visit sick friends or relatives. However, if they themselves have been unwell they could be putting others at risk, so we advise they stay at home until they have been symptom free for 48 hours.

‘If you’re unsure whether to visit, please feel free to contact the ward before you come into hospital.’

GPs or NHS Direct on 0845 4647 should be able to provide advice if symptoms are prolonged and people are worried. They will also be able to provide advice for people who are at greater risk from dehydration from diarrhoea and vomiting such as children under the age of five or the elderly.
